The Hi-Tech Vietnam granular activated carbon filter is a 10 inch, 2nd stage cartridge for domestic RO water filters. It sits right after the sediment filter. Its job is to take chlorine, organic compounds and odour-causing gases out of the water before it reaches the CTO carbon block and the RO membrane.

Hi-Tech is a Vietnam-made brand that Axtron Pakistan supplies alongside the Axtron and Classic Pure ranges. The cartridge is a standard 10 inch size, so it fits almost every domestic RO plant in Pakistan, whatever the brand.

What Does UDF Mean?

The label prints UDF as “Universal Density Filtration”. In the Pakistani market, UDF and GAC refer to the same type of cartridge: a housing filled with loose granular activated carbon. If your technician asks for a “UDF filter”, this is the cartridge he means.

Why the 2nd Stage Matters in an RO Plant

Most domestic RO plants in Pakistan use this order:

1. PPF sediment filter: removes sand, mud and rust. See the Hi-Tech Vietnam PPF sediment filter.
2. GAC/UDF filter (this product): removes most of the chlorine, smell and taste.
3. CTO carbon block: a second, finer carbon stage. See the Hi-Tech Vietnam CTO carbon block filter.
4. RO membrane: the main purification stage.
5. Post-membrane stages: post carbon, mineral, nano silver, alkaline or others. These can be changed or rearranged to suit your water quality and needs.

Chlorine damages the thin-film RO membrane over time. A fresh GAC at stage 2, backed by the CTO at stage 3, keeps chlorine away from the membrane and helps it last its normal life.

GAC/UDF vs CTO – Why You Need Both

The UDF holds loose carbon granules. Water passes through it quickly and most of the chlorine and smell is removed here. The CTO is carbon compressed into a solid block, giving a finer second pass. Together they give the membrane much better protection than either one alone.

When to Replace the Hi-Tech GAC/UDF Filter

The label says the cartridge should be replaced in time. From our field experience servicing RO plants:

• Replace the GAC/UDF every 3 months at most. Once the carbon is used up, it stops removing chlorine and can start giving the water a smell.
• Change the CTO at the same time. It follows the same 3-month cycle.
• Change the PPF every 15–30 days, or when it turns fully brown or dark. A late PPF change sends dirt into the carbon and shortens its life.
• RO plant left unused for some time? Replace all cartridges before using it again. Stale water inside the housings causes smell, and dried cartridges don’t perform properly.

Fresh pre-filters on time help the RO membrane last its normal life of about 1 year. Late pre-filter changes, high TDS and long running hours shorten it.

How to Replace the UDF Filter

1. Close the water inlet and switch off the RO plant.
2. Open the faucet to release pressure.
3. Unscrew the 2nd stage housing with a housing spanner.
4. Remove the old cartridge and wash the inside of the housing.
5. Check that the O-ring is seated properly, then fit the new Hi-Tech UDF.
6. Tighten the housing, open the water, and let the first water run to drain until it comes out clear.

Who Should Use the Hi-Tech GAC/UDF Filter

• Homes with a domestic RO plant that uses standard 10 inch housings
• Homes on chlorinated tap water or bore water with a smell
• Anyone doing the regular 3-month pre-filter change

GAC does not reduce hardness. In areas with very hard bore water, such as many parts of Multan and South Punjab, ask us about adding a cation resin softening cartridge to protect the membrane.
