4040 vs 8040 – Which Commercial Membrane Does Your Plant Need?
A 4040 membrane is about 4 inches wide and 40 inches long. An 8040 is about 8 inches wide and 40 inches long. A plant’s capacity decides how many, and which, membranes it uses.

In practice, most 1 ton plants use a single 8040. For 2 ton plants and above, we discuss your daily water demand, water quality and budget, then design the membrane setup to match.
Each membrane needs a shell (pressure housing) of its own size. A 4040 cannot be fitted in place of an 8040, or the other way round, without changing the shell.
Types of Commercial RO Membranes We Supply
Brackish Water (BW) Membranes
These are the standard choice for most bore water and supply water in Pakistan. Options include the FilmTec BW30-4040, Suro BW-4040, Suro BW-8040, RTL BW4040, RTL BW8040, AXFLOW BW4040 and AXFLOW BW8040.
Ultra Low Pressure (ULP) Membranes
ULP membranes are designed to work at a lower operating pressure than standard membranes. Options include the Suro ULP-4040 and the Suro ULP-8040.
Fouling Resistant (FR) Membranes
FR membranes are designed for feed water that tends to foul or clog membranes faster. An example is the Suro FR-8040.
Choosing between BW, ULP and FR depends on your water report and plant design. We recommend the type after checking your water and plant.
What Decides 4040 and 8040 Membrane Price in Pakistan?
- Size: an 8040 membrane costs considerably more than a 4040.
- Brand: FilmTec, Suro, RTL and AXFLOW are each priced differently.
- Type: brackish water, ultra low pressure and fouling-resistant membranes are built for different conditions.
- Your water: the wrong membrane for your water chokes early, and that costs far more than the price difference between models.

High TDS Water and Water Reports
Commercial plants in Multan, Bahawalpur and much of South Punjab and Sindh often run on bore water with high TDS, hardness and sometimes arsenic. In our experience, RTL membranes can work on raw water up to around 5,000 TDS. Beyond that, the whole plant has to be designed around a full water report.
We test TDS, arsenic, pH and hardness at our Multan, Lahore and Bahawalpur shops. Water bottling businesses, and customers in other cities, should get a detailed test from PCRWR (Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources) and share the report with us. We advise according to that report, and water quality, government standards and SOPs always come first.
Why Commercial Membranes Choke Early – Field Experience
There is no fixed life for any commercial membrane. Under standard water, standard use and proper maintenance, a membrane can work for up to about 1 year, but this is a guide only. In the field, we see four common reasons membranes choke early:
- Unfiltered water reaching the membrane. Jumbo pre-filters are missing or changed late. With rusty or dusty raw water and no serviced PPF, a new membrane can choke on the very first day.
- Running too many hours. Standard use is 6 to 8 hours per day. Many owners run a 1 ton plant 12 to 18 hours a day. This wears out the filters, the membrane and other parts much faster and raises maintenance costs. If 6–8 hours can’t meet your demand, a bigger plant (2 ton or more) is the more economical choice.
- High salt content in the feed water, without a plant designed for it.
- Self-handling. Owners or untrained workers remove and refit membranes themselves and damage them.
Timely pre-filter service is the single biggest protection for your membrane. Jumbo PPF, GAC and CTO cartridges are available under commercial filters.
