The Axtron Alkaline Filter Cartridge is an inline post filter for domestic RO plants. It's fitted after the RO membrane and maintains the pH of the purified water at 8–9.5, a tested level that is suitable for drinking. Why RO Water Needs an Alkaline Stage
An RO membrane removes most of the dissolved salts in water. That is what makes RO water pure, but it also leaves the water with very little dissolved mineral content, and RO water often comes out slightly acidic.
The alkaline cartridge corrects this. As the RO water passes through the alkaline media inside the cartridge, its pH is brought up to and kept at 8–9.5. That way the water from your RO plant stays at a pH level that is suitable for drinking.
Where It Fits in Your RO Plant
Every RO plant has the same first four stages: PPF, GAC, CTO and then the RO membrane. These stay fixed.
The stages after the membrane are flexible. They can be chosen and changed according to your water quality and what you need. The alkaline cartridge is one of these post-filter options, and it can be fitted in:
- A 6 stage RO plant: in place of, or alongside, another post filter, depending on your water
- A 7 stage RO plant: as one of the post-filter stages
- An 8 stage RO plant: usually alongside the post carbon, mineral and Nano Silver cartridges
It's an inline cartridge, so it connects in the water line after the membrane rather than sitting in a 10 inch housing. The one rule is that it always goes after the RO membrane, never before it.

When to Replace It
Like every cartridge that comes after the RO membrane, the alkaline cartridge lasts one year at most. After that it can no longer keep the water in the 8–9.5 pH range, even if water still flows through it normally.
The easiest way to stay on schedule is to change it once a year along with your other post filters and the membrane. The 8 stage RO filter replacement deal includes the alkaline cartridge with all the other filters, and costs less than buying them separately.
Your pre-filters need changing much more often. From our field experience, change the PPF filter every 15–30 days and the GAC and CTO every 3 months at most.
