AXFLOW BW8040 RO Membrane
The AXFLOW BW8040 is the full-size commercial reverse osmosis element — 8 inches in diameter, 40 inches long. One membrane produces 1000 litres per hour, which is why a single BW8040 is enough to run a one ton plant on its own.
BW stands for brackish water, the membrane type built for the high-TDS ground water found across most of Pakistan. Salt rejection is 99%.

One Membrane, One Ton
The practical advantage of an 8040 over paired 4040s is simplicity.
A one ton plant needs 1000 litres per hour. You can reach that with two BW4040 membranes at 500 LPH each, or with one BW8040.
Most one ton plants in Pakistan use the single 8040, and for good reason — one pressure vessel instead of two, one set of connections, one membrane to change at service time, and fewer joints that can leak. On a plant you are running commercially, that matters more than the component cost.
Where the 4040 pairing makes sense is on existing plants already built around 4040 vessels, where converting to an 8040 would mean replacing the housing as well.
You Need an 8040 Pressure Vessel
This membrane requires an 8040 shell. Size must match — an 8040 element will not fit a 4040 vessel, and the reverse is equally true.
If you are replacing an existing membrane, your current vessel is already correct. For a new build, our commercial RO plant shells cover the 8040 size.
Install It Properly or It Will Not Last
An 8040 membrane is heavy, awkward, and expensive. More get damaged during fitting than most people realise.
Check the flow direction. The label carries a flow arrow. Fitted backwards, the membrane will not reject properly and may be damaged permanently on the first run.
Wet the brine seal before sliding it in. Pushing a dry membrane into a dry vessel tears the seal or displaces it. A damaged brine seal lets feed water bypass the membrane entirely — the plant runs, but the water does not improve.
Do not force it. If it resists, something is misaligned. Forcing it damages the outer wrap.
Flush before use. New membranes carry a preservative solution. Run to drain before taking any product water.
If you would rather not handle it yourself, our teams in Multan, Lahore and Bahawalpur fit membranes on site.
Why Membranes Carry No Warranty
We would rather explain this than bury it in terms and conditions.
Membrane life is decided almost entirely by how the plant is run, not by the membrane. The same element can last years on one plant and choke within months on another.
Pre-filtration is the main factor. Everything the sediment and carbon filters fail to catch arrives at the membrane instead. Late filter servicing is the single most common cause of early membrane failure we see.
Running hours. A plant running twelve or more hours a day works its membrane far harder than one running a few hours. That shortens life, and it is not a fault.
Feed water quality. The higher the TDS entering the plant, the harder the membrane works and the sooner it tires.
Handling. Membranes removed and refitted by hand without care get damaged, as covered above.
No supplier can guarantee an element across those four variables, and any who claim to are not being straight with you. What we can do is tell you exactly what shortens membrane life so you can avoid it.
Service your pre-filters on schedule. PPF sediment cartridges need changing every 15 to 30 days depending on your water. Carbon cartridges last up to 3 months. Those cartridges cost a tiny fraction of this membrane, and keeping them fresh is the cheapest protection you have. See our commercial filters.
When to Replace
Product water TDS rising. The clearest signal. Rejection is dropping.
Output falling. Less water for the same running time — but check the sediment cartridges first. A clogged pre-filter produces the same symptom at a fraction of the cost, and we have had plenty of customers ready to spend on a membrane when the real problem was a blocked PPF.
Pressure climbing with no gain in output. Usually fouling or scaling.
Keep a log of product TDS. A plant where someone records the reading weekly spots membrane decline months before one where nobody checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does BW8040 mean?
BW is brackish water, the element type for high-TDS ground water. 8040 is the size — 8 inches diameter by 40 inches long.
How much water does it produce?
1000 litres per hour, roughly 6,340 gallons per day. Actual output varies with feed TDS, temperature and pressure — every membrane produces less on harder water.
How many do I need for a 1 ton plant?
One. A single BW8040 covers 1000 LPH, which is why it is the usual choice for one ton plants.
Should I use one 8040 or two 4040s?
For a new one ton plant, the single 8040 is simpler — one vessel, one set of connections, one membrane at service time. Two 4040s make sense only if your plant is already built around 4040 vessels.
Will it fit my existing plant?
If your plant uses an 8040 pressure vessel, yes. Send us a photo of the existing vessel if you are unsure.
Is there a warranty?
No, and no supplier can honestly offer one. Membrane life depends on pre-filter servicing, running hours, feed water quality and correct handling — all of which sit with the operator.
Where is it made?
China. The packaging notes that the technology derives from the USA, which refers to the design, not the place of manufacture.
What comes in the box?
The membrane, O-rings and brine seal. The pressure vessel is separate.
Can I fit it myself?
Yes, with care — check the flow arrow, wet the brine seal, never force it, and flush before use. Our teams in Multan, Lahore and Bahawalpur will fit it for you if you would rather not.
