This GAC filter from Axtron is a 10 inch granular activated carbon cartridge made in Vietnam. It removes chlorine and the organic compounds and gases that cause odours in water, and it eliminates oxidants that damage RO membranes. It’s the 2nd stage in most water filters and RO plants, and it fits every standard 10 inch housing in Pakistan. What the Axtron GAC Filter Does
As printed on the cartridge label, the Axtron GAC:
- Removes chlorine from water
- Removes surplus organic compounds and gases that cause odours
- Eliminates oxidants that damage RO membranes
The label also says plainly: the cartridge should be replaced in time. That matches our field experience, covered below.
What it doesn’t do:
- It doesn’t stop dust, rust, sand or mud. The PPF sediment filter does that.
- It doesn’t reduce TDS. The RO membrane does that.

GAC vs CTO: Why Most Systems Use Both
Both are carbon filters, but they’re different cartridges that work one after the other:

Where the GAC Filter Fits
The GAC goes in the 2nd stage, right after the PPF sediment filter. The standard 3-stage setup is:
- PPF sediment filter: stops dust, rust, sand and mud
- GAC filter (this product): removes chlorine and odour
- CTO filter: further removes chlorine and odour, and protects the membrane
PPF + GAC + CTO is the setup for clear water with taste or smell problems. A 10 inch domestic water filter suits a home of 5–8 people.
H2: When to Change a GAC Filter
From our field experience with water in Pakistan, change a GAC filter every 3 months at most. After that, the carbon stops working and starts causing smell in the water. Old carbon is one of the most common reasons customers complain of smelly water.
Change the GAC and CTO together every 3 months, and the PPF every 15–30 days. To cover all three on schedule:
- RO water filter cartridge set: 1 PPF, 1 GAC, 1 CTO
- RO filter set for 3 months: 3 PPF, 1 GAC, 1 CTO
- RO filter set for 6 months: 6 PPF, 2 GAC, 2 CTO
Two more tips from our service team:
- Filter left unused for a while? Replace all cartridges before using it again. Standing water in the housings goes stale and starts to smell, and empty housings dry the cartridges out.
- Non-electric water filters: use normal overhead tank pressure. Never connect directly to a motor or pump line.
