How to read this:

• Micron: the lower the number, the finer the cleaning. A 5 micron filter catches larger particles than a 1 or 0.3 micron filter.
• Weight: the heavier the cartridge, the more dirt it can hold and the more days it works before choking.

The 5 micron Gold suits fairly clean water when you’re happy to change the filter regularly. If your water carries a lot of mud or rust, a heavier, finer grade will last longer and protect your membrane better.

The 5 micron Gold stops the visible dirt that comes through household water supplies:

When to Change a 5 Micron Filter

Our field experience puts PPF life at 15–30 days. At 100 grams, this cartridge holds the least material in the Axtron range, so it fills up faster than the heavier grades. With dirty water, plan to change it closer to 15 days.

The cartridge itself tells you when it’s done: when it’s fully brown or dark, change it. With a transparent 10 inch housing you can see this at a glance. A choked PPF lets dirt pass on to your carbon cartridges and membrane, so changing it on time is the cheapest protection your system can get.

From our service team:

• Filter switched off for a while? Replace all cartridges before using it again. Standing water goes stale in the housings, and empty housings dry the cartridges out.
• Non-electric filters: use normal overhead tank pressure. Never connect directly to a motor or pump line.
