Why Hard Water Damages an RO Plant

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When this water is pushed through an RO membrane under pressure, these minerals can settle out and form a hard layer called scale. Scale builds up on the membrane surface and inside the pump. The usual signs are:

• Pure water output drops even though the pre-filters are new
• The membrane needs replacing sooner than expected
• The booster pump works harder and gets noisier

An anti scalant cartridge doesn't remove these minerals. It stops them from sticking and hardening inside the system, so your membrane and pump stay clean for longer.

How the Anti Scalant Cartridge Works

The cartridge is filled with silicos polyphosphate. As water passes through, a small amount of this media dissolves into the water. It binds with calcium and magnesium and keeps them in suspension, so they pass through and drain out with the reject water instead of forming scale on the membrane.

What it does not do: it doesn't soften water, lower TDS or remove salts. The RO membrane does that job. The anti scalant cartridge is there to protect the membrane and pump while they work.

Where to Install It in Your RO Plant

Install the cartridge after the solenoid valve and before the RO booster pump. That way the treated water reaches the pump and then the membrane. In a domestic RO plant, the water passes through these stages in order:

1. Sediment and carbon pre-filters (PPF, GAC, CTO)
2. Solenoid valve
3. Anti scalant cartridge
4. Booster pump
5. RO membrane

Replacement and Maintenance

The polyphosphate media dissolves slowly as water passes through it. Once it is used up, the cartridge stops protecting your system, so it needs replacing. How long it lasts depends on how hard your water is and how much water your RO plant produces each day.

A simple habit: check the anti scalant cartridge every time you service your pre-filters. In our field experience, sediment (PPF) cartridges need changing every 15–30 days depending on how dirty the water is, and carbon (GAC/CTO) cartridges every 3 months at most. Replacement 10 inch domestic filter cartridges are available from the same shops.

If your RO plant has been switched off for a long time, replace all cartridges before using it again. Water left standing in the housings goes stale, and empty housings leave cartridges dried out.
