AXFLOW BW4040 RO Membrane
The AXFLOW BW4040 is a brackish water reverse osmosis element built for half ton commercial plants. BW stands for brackish water, and 4040 is the size — 4 inches in diameter, 40 inches long, the standard commercial membrane format used across Pakistan.
At 500 litres per hour with 99% salt rejection, it handles the high-TDS ground water common across Punjab and Sindh. Operating pressure is 225 PSI.

Which Plant Size Does This Suit?
Half ton plants — 500 LPH. One BW4040 covers this.
One ton plants — 1000 LPH. Two BW4040 membranes, or a single 8040. In practice most one ton plants in Pakistan run a single 8040 rather than paired 4040s — fewer connections, simpler servicing.
If you are unsure what your plant takes, send us a photo of the existing shell on WhatsApp and we will confirm.
You Need a 4040 Shell
This membrane fits a 4040 pressure vessel. The shell must match the membrane size — a 4040 element will not work in an 8040 housing or the reverse.
If you are replacing an existing membrane, your current shell is already the right size. If you are building a new plant, our commercial RO plant shells cover the 4040 size.
Why There Is No Warranty on RO Membranes
We would rather explain this properly than hide it in small print.
An RO membrane is a consumable, and how long it lasts is almost entirely determined by how it is treated. We have seen the same membrane last years on one plant and choke within months on another. The difference is never the membrane.
Pre-filtration is the main factor. If the jumbo sediment and carbon filters ahead of the membrane are not serviced on time, everything they were supposed to catch reaches the membrane instead. That is the single most common cause of early failure we see.
Running hours matter. A plant running twelve or more hours a day works the membrane far harder than one running a few hours. Heavy use shortens membrane life, and that is physics, not a defect.
Water quality matters. High salt content puts the membrane under more load. The higher the TDS going in, the harder it works and the sooner it tires.
Self-handling causes damage. Many customers remove and refit membranes themselves. Done wrong — wrong orientation, damaged brine seal, forced into a dry shell — the membrane is compromised immediately.
So no supplier can honestly guarantee a membrane without controlling all four of those things, and nobody does. What we can do is tell you plainly what shortens membrane life, and help you avoid it.
Service your pre-filters on schedule. PPF sediment cartridges need changing every 15 to 30 days depending on your water. Carbon cartridges last up to 3 months. Those cartridges cost a fraction of this membrane, and keeping them fresh is the cheapest protection available to you. See our commercial filters for replacements.

Signs Your Membrane Needs Replacing
TDS output rising. The clearest signal. If your product water TDS climbs over time, rejection is dropping.
Output volume falling. Less water produced for the same running time — though check your sediment cartridge first, because a clogged pre-filter causes the same symptom at a fraction of the cost.
Taste changing. Usually follows rising TDS.
Before replacing a membrane, check the pre-filters. We have had many customers ready to buy a new membrane whose actual problem was a blocked PPF.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does BW4040 mean?
BW is brackish water, the membrane type suited to high-TDS ground water. 4040 is the size — 4 inches diameter by 40 inches long.
How many litres per hour does it produce?
500 litres per hour, which is why it suits half ton plants. Actual output varies with feed water TDS, temperature and pressure — higher TDS means lower output from any membrane.
Will it fit my plant?
If your plant uses a 4040 shell, yes. Send us a photo of your existing membrane or shell if you are unsure.
How many do I need for a 1 ton plant?
Two BW4040 membranes, or one 8040. Most 1000 LPH plants in Pakistan use a single 8040 instead.
Is there a warranty?
No, and no supplier can honestly offer one on a membrane. Membrane life depends on pre-filter servicing, daily running hours, feed water quality and correct handling — all of which sit with the operator, not the manufacturer.
How long will it last?
There is no fixed answer. On a well-maintained plant with pre-filters changed on schedule and moderate running hours, considerably longer than on a plant where filters are neglected and the system runs all day.
Where is it made?
China. The packaging states the technology derives from the USA, which refers to the design and licensing, not the place of manufacture.
What comes in the box?
The membrane, O-rings and the brine seal. The shell is separate.
